Winter Redfish

Having picked out a perfect morning low tide months ago, Keith and Jill were ready for some serious sight fishing. With light winds and glassy waters, the big schools of redfish were easy to see. The fish were happy this morning busting small mullet and flashing in the sunshine. Most importantly, they ate whatever was put in front of them: blue crab, cut mullet and artificials. At times, we could barely keep one rod in the water as the bite was so hot. Jill had the last word with her 14 pound trophy!

Sullivan’s Island Fishing

Birthday Winner

Spent a full day charter with members of the Bohan clan as they competed to see who could catch the biggest redfish. We were fishing the day right in front of a storm system and I hoped the bite would be on. Boy, was it ever! Redfish would just flat out crush blue crab. Matt got on the board early with a nice twelve pounder only to be topped by Joe’s fourteen pounder later in the afternoon. Colby, the birthday boy, slammed the lid shut when he boated a whopping 16lb. red!

We started the charter with one big redfish, a 9lb. beauty, and the trip just picked up from there. Our next stop produced several reds and a weakfish from under a dock. Moved to another dock and caught at least a dozen more reds with multiple double hookups. Everything caught on mud minnows either on the bottom or on jig heads. As we headed for home, we left them biting!

Heavy winds pushed us into the creeks. Fortunately, the Alphin clan is always up for chasing “the strike” wherever it may be. Started pitching chunks of blue crab into deep holes around docks. Redfish hit so hard and heavy that light tackle gear was of no use. Switched over to shark rods and turned the drag down so tight we could barely pull line out with our hands. Everyone had a big redfish by the end of the day but Hunter set the bar with a 33″ beauty!

Rolled up onto the flat at first light and the schools weren’t hard to make out. Large halos of nervous water cruised up and down the bank sometimes punctuated by a noisy blowup of a redfish crushing shrimp. We posted up and waited for a school to come to us. Soon after, a large school swam in our direction and you could see the push of their backs in skinny water. Colin made a perfect cast putting a grey artificial fluke a few feet in front of the school. Almost immediately, there was a tremendous commotion and his drag screamed. Several minutes later he brought this 14 pounder alongside the boat. Wish all mornings started this way.

Under dark skies and with lightening cells off in the distance, we met early in the morning to fish the rising tide. While the clouds hung around for the duration, we stayed dry for almost the entire charter. Started off fast catching bonnethead sharks with blue crab at slack low tide. After everyone had one in the boat, we switched over to popping corks and mud minnows. By the end of the day, everyone had caught a redfish as well. Will ended the trip with this 9lb. beauty!

Started the charter around high tide on a brilliantly sunny day. Went to the middle of the harbor while waiting for the current to pick up steam. Found plenty of Atlantic Sharpnose eagerly taking cut bluefish and croaker. After getting our fill of sharks, we headed off in search of other gamefish. Mud minnows proved to be effective either under popping corks or bumped along the bottom with a jighead. Caught many trout and ended the trip with a three pound flounder!

Headed off to Ranger school on Monday, Luke and his family wanted to get some fishing in before he left home. Started the charter watching bluefish and smaller trout mess with our popping corks. Kept moving until we found a strong trout bite that lasted for almost an hour with Luke putting the largest keeper in the boat. He wasn’t done yet. As we finished the charter, Luke’s cork got smoked and a few minutes later he had a beautiful 11 pound redfish onboard! A fishing memory that will hopefully keep a smile on his face throughout training.

Found a few seams of calm weather in an otherwise windy stretch of days. We were able to pole on the flats and the redfish clearly did not mind the bouts of choppy water. Schools of redfish could be seen flashing their bellies in the sun as they fed. There were no takers on artificials so we switched over to cut mullet. It sure did the trick as we caught redfish up to eleven pounds. The bite stayed on for a solid two hours until the water got up into the grass.

Kiawah Fishing Charters

A day after a new moon, we were faced with a ripping tide that would drop over six feet in four hours. Started out by working docks with mud minnows on jigheads and caught redfish up to seven pounds. Moved over to the flats and threw out cut mullet. The current kept the lines taught so when a fish hit it was violent! Landed several nice redfish including a thirteen pounder.
