Fishing Charleston SC
Leave the dock at first light to try and beat the wind. Our goal is to get Chappy his first redfish. As we get to the first spot, the wind is a little stronger than advertised but it’s fine. Cover lots of water over the next three hours. Mix up artificials, mostly the jerk shad, with bait, blue crab and menhaden. Miss two strikes on the jerk shad but it is slow going. Make a long run to hit one last spot. Wind is way stronger and we anchor up in some very choppy water. In just a few minutes, Chappy lands his first redfish on cut menhaden. The fish is only three pounds but the trip is saved. A few minutes later, the rod bows over again and Chappy fights a fish for a good 5 minutes plus. I’m thinking it is a bonnethead shark at this point and when he brings it to the boat – it’s a 13 pound redfish. Ummm………good start. It’s the biggest inshore redfish put in the boat during May. Put the lines right back out. Over the next half an hour, Chappy lands three 9 pound reds mixed in with his first ladyfish. By the third nine pounder, I am just shaking my head and laughing. Best run of fish out of a single spot this year. Congrats to Chappy for hanging in there. He’ll be jaded for the rest of his angling career.
